Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two early morning structure fires.

Burrows Avenue fire

At 4:54 a.m. on Friday, January 10, 2025, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a vacant, single-storey house in the 700 block of Burrows Avenue.

When crews arrived to the scene, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure. They initially launched a fire attack from the exterior. Once it was safe to do so, they transitioned to an interior fire attack. The fire was declared under control at 6:26 a.m.

Crews completed a search of the structure and no occupants were found. There were no injuries reported.

The fire is under investigation.

The house sustained significant smoke, fire and water damage in today’s fire. It was previously damaged by a fire in May 2024.

Once roads are reopened, residents should use caution in the area, as water used to fight the fire will be frozen, creating slippery conditions. City of Winnipeg crews will be monitoring conditions and applying sand and de-icing agents to roadways and sidewalks as required to improve traction

Anyone who sees someone actively entering a vacant building, or removing boards from windows or doors from a building, should call 911 to report the incident immediately.

If you notice boarded windows or doors that have been breached, but you do not see someone actively entering or trying to enter the building, report the incident to 311 by phone or online.

Maryland Street fire

At 3:54 a.m. on Friday, January 10, 2025, WFPS crews responded to reports of a fire in a three-storey apartment building in the 600 block of Maryland Street.

Upon arrival on scene, crews found light smoke in the building. They located a fire in one of the suites. They launched an interior fire attack and declared the fire under control at 4:08 a.m. Damage was primarily contained to the suite where the fire occurred.

Residents self-evacuated from the building. No injuries were reported.

The fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available.
