Winnipeg, MB – At 6:18 a.m. on Monday, November 25, 2024, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a two-and-a-half storey mixed-use commercial and multi-family residence in the 400 block of Elgin Avenue. The commercial part of the building was occupied while the residential units were vacant.
When crews arrived to the scene, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure. They initially launched an offensive fire attack and searched the building, confirming that all occupants had safely self-evacuated.
Due to worsening fire conditions, crews were forced to exit the building and transition to an exterior fire attack. Firefighting operations remain ongoing at this time. Firefighters are using handlines and aerial ladder trucks to apply water to the fire. The WFPS drone is also being used to direct crews to hotspots.
The building has sustained significant smoke, fire and water damage. Due to structural concerns, emergency demolition is being arranged. Road closures in the area will remain in place until work is completed at the scene.
There have been no injuries reported.
The fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available.
