It can be difficult to imagine a world without racism, but that vision and how to get there, is the focus of the City of Winnipeg’s Anti-Racism Week which runs until March 27, 2021.
“We are proud and honoured to partner with several Indigenous, newcomer, and community organizations during this week on such a meaningful and important initiative,” said Cindy Fernandes, Director of Community Services.
During the week, you have the opportunity to take part in several virtual events on a variety of topics that explore identifying and eliminating systemic racism. The events are put on in partnership with the following organizations:
- Immigration Partnership Winnipeg
- Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce
- Treaty Relations Commission of Manitoba
- Elmwood Community Resource Centre
- Manitoba Association for Rights and Liberties
- Human Rights Hub
- Black History Manitoba

Around a dozen internal training opportunities on topics such as Treaties, busting the myth of reverse racism, anti-racism cafés, and panel discussions are being offered to all employees. All senior management and council members will be taking anti-oppression, anti-racism, and cultural competency training during the week.
Anti-Racism Week is one part of the Anti-Racism Initiatives Report supported and approved by Council in July 2020. This is one of the ways we are building on the work done in our Newcomer Welcome and Inclusion Policy.
