Winnipeg, MB - Members of the public are invited to attend a Candlelight Service of Remembrance today, Thursday, September 22 at 8 p.m. at the Field of Honour in Brookside Cemetery, 3001 Notre Dame Avenue to recognize and honour those who have served.
A candle will be placed on each of the more than 11,000 military monuments found in Brookside Cemetery, one of the oldest and largest military interment sites in Canada.
“Thousands of Canadian men and women have served and given their lives during war to help bring about peace, and they deserve our remembrance and thanks,” said Jon Reyes, Member of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly for St. Norbert and Special Envoy for Military Affairs in Manitoba. “We continue to honour and commemorate their service, as well as the sacrifices made by the families they left behind.”
“This service is about giving thanks, and honouring a past that has shaped us as a city, a province, and a nation,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “It is also a chance to remember and recognize the tremendous sacrifices made to make our country and our city safe.”
In addition to all three levels of government, Lieutenant Governor Janice Filmon and military representatives will take part in the service.
