Arbor Day

Arbor Day is a special day set aside each year to celebrate trees in our communities. Arbor Day was conceived by J. Sterling Morton in Nebraska, U.S.A. where the first Arbor Day took place in 1872. Since that time it has been celebrated throughout the U.S.A., Canada and other countries. The first Arbor Day in Canada is believed to have been celebrated in 1906 in Ontario.

In the late 1800's and early 1900's, Arbor Day was adopted by many schools where students were involved in a variety of activities to learn about and appreciate trees. Students also planted trees in their schoolyards and communities.

To continue this tradition, each spring the City of Winnipeg Urban Forestry Branch sponsors a school in Winnipeg to celebrate Arbor Day. The day is commemorated with a special assembly hosted by the school with student presentations, and includes a tree planting ceremony with the assistance of the Urban Forestry Branch.

In January, the Urban Forestry Branch sends out letters to School Divisions in Winnipeg announcing Arbor Day and requesting nominations for a host school. If you are interested in having your school host Arbor Day, let your teacher know!

As the Urban Forestry Branch Arbor Day host, your school will also have the opportunity to participate in a poster contest. The winning poster will appear on Arbor Day t-shirts at Trees Winnipeg's Arbor Day in the Park on the first Saturday of June.

The 2023 event will be held on Saturday, June 3rd at Crescent Drive Park
