Tree Root Claims

How do I submit a Tree Root claim?

The Original Tree Root invoice can either be mailed, faxed, e-mailed or dropped off at the City of Winnipeg Risk Management office:

Mailing Address:
The City of Winnipeg Claims Section
3rd Floor - 185 King Street
Winnipeg, Manitoba
R3B 1J1

Fax: 311
E-mail: 311@winnipeg.ca

For additional questions about Tree Root Claims call 311.

Please ensure the following is included on your Invoice:

  • Verify that your name and address are correct and legible
  • Ensure that the technician has written down on the invoice that tree roots were found
  • If you are claiming for tree roots on your rental property please ensure the rental property address is on the invoice. Also, make sure to include the address to which you want the cheque mailed

Keep a copy of the invoice for your records. Once the Invoice has been received by the Claims Section it will take approximately three (3) to six (6) weeks for a cheque to be processed and mailed to the mailing address given.

Your tree root claim will be denied if:

  • The date on the invoice is more than the statute of limitations (two years).
  • You have had a claim in the last twelve months (for example if your last invoice date was January 2nd, 2008 then the next invoice date that will be accepted would be January 3rd, 2009.)
  • The invoice does not indicate tree roots were found.

Amount Paid for Tree Root Claims:

On June 22, 1994, City Council approved the following policy:

"The City will, on an ex gratia basis, reimburse 50% of the actual cost of removing tree root obstructions from private sewer lines where it would appear that a City tree(s) is causing the obstruction, and that such ex gratia payments be subject to a maximum payment of $50.00 and be limited to one every twelve months".

What should I do if I want a City Tree Removed?

  • The City of Winnipeg's Forestry Branch is responsible for removing City Trees. Please go to Forestry's website for more information about having your tree removed.

Does the City have any programs to help with Private Sewer Repairs?
