Whether you’re in the pool, or enjoying one of Winnipeg’s many waterways, always make sure to stay safe around water. We’ve made videos to help Newcomers understand the basics of water safety.
The videos include tips on how to fit a life jacket and how to prepare for the dangers of open water.
“Anyone in and around water should know how to keep themselves and others safe,” said Jennifer Sarna, Manager of Recreation Services.
One of the steps shared in the video is to keep learning. We encourage all Newcomers to check out these videos, and sign up for our Swim for Life swimming lessons.
The videos are available in Arabic, English, French, Punjabi, and Tagalog.
Educating Newcomers on important life safety issues is one of the goals of the Newcomer Welcome and Inclusion Policy.
“Newcomers often come from countries where swimming and water safety training are not common activities,” said Gololcha Boru, Special Projects and Initiatives Lead with the City's Community Development Division.
Language barriers, money, transportation, and cultural or religious factors can prevent Newcomers from accessing this information. We hope these videos can help all residents safely enjoy the many water activities in our city and province.
Swimming lessons are available for children as young as six months old up to adult classes. We also offer a Fee Assistance Program for residents living on low income.
