Five new employees in our Recreation Services division were recently celebrated for participating in the Youth Lifeguard Recruitment Program.

Over the past year, we worked with community partners to identify eligible youth between ages 15 and 30, including Indigenous youth, who may be interested in a career in lifeguarding and other aquatic recreation positions. The pilot offered participants the opportunity to improve their swimming abilities while receiving the necessary lifeguarding certifications.

“The Youth Lifeguard Recruitment Program is one of several programs, including our Instructor Guard Recruitment Program, that we recently introduced to address ongoing lifeguard shortages and remove barriers to training,” said Jennifer Sarna, Manager of Recreation Services.

“Congratulations to everyone that participated in this program. We look forward to seeing you grow as leaders in your careers with us.”

Lessons included swim stroke development, CPR and first aid, and aquatic leadership courses, as well as nutrition education, resume writing, and communication skills. Cultural elements such as Elder-led teachings on traditional roles and ceremonies, and the sharing of traditional meals were also incorporated into the program.

“The Youth Lifeguard Recruitment Program was a great opportunity for us to promote employment opportunities and increase Indigenous representation in lifeguarding within our pools,” said Jacquie Lylyk, Community Development Worker with our Indigenous Relations Division.

Oshki Annishinabe Nigaaniwak, our Indigenous Youth Strategy was delighted to partner with Recreation Services to develop and deliver a program that included professional development, culturally relevant programing, and assist in removing barriers for youth to succeed. Overall the program was a great success.”
