A number of City of Winnipeg departments are being honoured with an award for their work on the 2023 budget.

Earlier this month, the Government Finance Officers Association of Canada and the U.S. (GFOA) awarded the City of Winnipeg with the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award.

This is the sixth year in a row we have won this award, but the first time we were given a special performance measures recognition.

GFOA says the award reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of government budgeting.

There are over 1,700 participants in the association’s Budget Awards Program.

In order to receive the budget award, the government had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation, which assess how well the budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, a guide for operations, and a device to communicate with citizens and staff.

“This award is a recognition of the collaboration that took place between all City departments and elected officials,” said Liza Pablo, the Corporate Manager of Financial Planning and Review for the City of Winnipeg.

“This is truly a proud moment for the folks that work so hard behind the scenes serving Winnipeggers.”

With that said, there’s still room to grow and improve in terms of budget reporting.

“We can always do better when it comes to making our financial reporting clearer and more concise for Winnipeggers. We are committed to making improvements in future years,” said Catherine Kloepfer, the City of Winnipeg’s Chief Financial Officer.

GFOA says award recipients like the City of Winnipeg pioneer efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example to other governments throughout North America.
