Mayor Scott Gillingham made the following statement tonight about the results of the 2023 Manitoba provincial election:
I wish to extend my warmest congratulations to Premier-elect Wab Kinew and the Manitoba NDP on their electoral victory. Mr. Kinew and his party clearly have earned the trust and mandate of Manitobans, and I am optimistic about what we can achieve for our city and our province.
Together, we have the opportunity to address some of the most pressing issues our community faces. Our shared vision for a single, comprehensive plan to combat homelessness, inspired by the Houston model, resonates deeply with me. By prioritizing a housing-first approach complemented by wraparound support services and robust data tracking, we can make a real difference in the lives of many, ensuring everyone has a place to call home.
Further, I am eager to work closely with the new provincial government on other shared priorities that matter to many Winnipeggers. Advancing critical infrastructure projects, such as the renewal of Kenaston Boulevard, extension of Chief Peguis Trail, and construction of new recreation facilities in Waverley West and Transcona are critical.
Mr. Kinew recently said that “Winnipeg’s downtown is Manitoba’s downtown,” and I look forward to working with his government to make enhancements to public safety and expedite the implementation of the Winnipeg Transit Master Plan to boost the revitalization of our city’s core.
With mutual respect, open dialogue, and common priorities, I am confident we can achieve great progress in the years to come.
I also want to recognize outgoing Premier Heather Stefanson and her government for their partnership over the past year. In particular, by creating legislation that allows for Winnipeg’s new Community Safety Team, funding the design work for the Kenaston and Chief Peguis projects, and reinstating the integrated warrant unit that targets violent offenders, they have helped the City make progress on important issues. I trust they will continue to be a strong voice for Winnipeg in opposition.
