Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to three early morning structure fires today, Tuesday, May 23, 2023.

St. Mary’s Road fire
At 12:30 a.m., the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a single-storey, multi-family residence in the 600 block of St. Mary’s Road.

When crews arrived to the scene, they found smoke coming from the house. They fought the fire from inside, declaring the fire under control at 1:05 a.m.

The two occupants of the house self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. One of them was assessed and treated by on-scene paramedics, and transported to hospital in critical condition. No other injuries were reported.

The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team responded to assist one displaced resident in finding temporary accommodations.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.

Messier Street fire
At 12:51 a.m., WFPS crews responded to reports of a fire at an industrial building and yard on Messier Street.

Upon arrival at the scene, crews found heavy smoke coming from a large pile of rubber and an adjacent structure. Crews fought the fire from outside the building. Heavy machinery was used to move the piles of material so hotspots could be accessed. The fire was declared under control at 3:41 a.m.

Occupants of the building safely evacuated. No injuries were reported.

A nearby rail line was temporarily shut down as a precaution. It has since reopened.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are unavailable at this time.

William Avenue fire
At 12:12 a.m., the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a vacant, two-and-a-half storey house in the 500 block of William Avenue.

When crews got to the scene, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure. Due to heavy fire conditions, crews fought the fire from the exterior of the house. The fire was declared under control at 1:05 a.m. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The house had sustained damage from previous fires in May 2022, March 2023, and April 2023.
