Winnipeg, MB – During a virtual reception today, Mayor Brian Bowman awarded this year's five winning recipients of the Mayor's Scholarship for Community Leadership.
“The annual presentation of the Mayor’s Scholarship for Community Leadership is a reminder of the inspiring work being done by Winnipeg’s young people,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “It is always gratifying to acknowledge this great work but especially against the backdrop of the global pandemic since those graduating this year had a much different experience than ever before.”
The annual scholarship is in its fifth year and each of the five scholarship recipients will receive a one thousand dollar scholarship in recognition of their consistent and outstanding dedication to making their community a better place to live by solving community problems or addressing a community need.
This year’s five scholarship recipients are:
Kyla Abdullah
High School: Transcona Collegiate
Volunteer Activity: Involved with the Gateway Food Bank and a Member of the Blood Donor Clinic Club at Transcona Collegiate that recruits students to donate blood. Involved with the Transcona Collegiate Titans for Tomorrow Club which promotes recycling and reusing. Also involved with the Community Clean Up Organization.
Educational Goal: Plans to pursue a Science degree.
Joshua Bond
High School: Westwood Collegiate
Volunteer Activity: Involved with the Christmas Cheer Board Manitoba, School for the Deaf, the Grace Hospital Youth Volunteer Program and the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation Keira’s Krusade.
Educational Goal: Plans to pursue a Mechanical Engineering at the University of Manitoba
Gabrielle David
High School: Collège Garden City Collegiate
Volunteer Activities: Executive Member of CGCC Student Council, Youth Against Mental Stigma Club and Youth in Philanthropy. Involved in Paws for a Cause, the Santa Claus Parade, Sinclair Park Christmas Party, Kids Fest, Siloam Mission, Winnipeg Harvest, Special Olympics Bowling and the Seven Oakes Hospital as a Unit Dialysis Helper.
Educational Goal: Plans to pursue a Science degree at the University of Manitoba.
Madlin Murad
High School: Grant Park High School
Volunteer Activities: Yazidi refugee who came to Canada in 2017, taught herself English and is currently learning French. She is a Volunteer Gallery Interpreter at the Manitoba Museum and a Recreational Assistant for seniors at the Misericordia Health Centre. She is also a Rady JCC Fitness Centre volunteer for those with special needs, a Member of the Social Justice Club and the Leader of the Educational Sustainable Development Club.
Educational Goal: Plans to study pursue a Political Science degree at the University of Manitoba.
Shubneet Thind
High School: Miles Macdonell Collegiate
Volunteer Activities: Member of Youth in Philanthropy Club including the Victoria Albert Project mentorship for inner-city youth and Sustainability Workshops at Prince Edward School. Chair of the Vietnamese Orphanage Committee and involved in the Miles Mac Bazaar which provides hygiene products, books, clothes, toys, food and art to those in need in the North End.
Educational Goal: Plans to pursue a Science degree at the University of Manitoba.
The Mayor’s Scholarship for Community Leadership rewards the achievements of Winnipeg’s future leaders and supports them on the path towards their educational and career goals.
Community leadership can be demonstrated through activities that promote racial and social inclusion, drive reconciliation, encourage environmental stewardship, and support or empower Winnipeg’s less fortunate. The Winnipeg Foundation manages the fund for the Mayor’s Scholarship including issuing scholarship cheques and tax receipts, as required. The Mayor’s Office manages application intake, and award recipients are selected by an independent selection panel.
