Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to several water rescue and fire calls

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to several significant incidents during the evening of July 4, 2020. This includes four simultaneous water rescue calls, an outdoor fire and two house fires. WFPS also responded to a house fire on the morning of July 5, 2020 that required assisting occupants out of the building.

At 8:12 p.m. crews responded to a residence for reports of an individual in distress in a swimming pool. One individual was transported to hospital in critical condition.

At 8:22 p.m. crews responded to The Forks area for reports of four youth, not wearing life jackets, on a dinghy in the Red River. Water rescue crews searched the area but did not find the youth.

At 8:29 p.m. crews responded to a call near Main Street and St. John’s Avenue to investigate reports of shoes on the riverbank and something in the water. Nothing was found.

At 8:51 p.m. crews responded to reports indicating there were two individuals holding onto a tree in the Assiniboine River near the Maryland Street Bridge. Water rescue crews searched the immediate and downstream areas and no individuals were located.

At 8:57 p.m. crews responded to an outdoor fire under the Donald Street Bridge. It was quickly extinguished.

At 8:59 p.m. on July 4, 2020, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a single-storey house in the 500 block of Marsden Street.

Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered smoke coming from the house and launched an offensive attack. The fire was declared under control at 9:31 p.m.

A search of the house was conducted and no occupants were found. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental due to an electrical issue. No damage estimates are available at this time

At 9:21 p.m. WFPS crews responded to reports of a fire in a one-and-a-half storey house in the 500 block of Aberdeen Avenue. When crews arrived on scene they found smoke coming from the home.

An offensive attack was taken and the fire was declared under control at 9:47 p.m.

Occupants of the house self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and no damage estimates are available at this time.

At 8:07 a.m. on July 5, 2020, WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey converted residential dwelling in the 400 block of College Avenue.

When crews arrived they encountered fire in the building and three occupants trapped on the upper floor. All were assisted out of the house and assessed by on-scene paramedics. No injuries were reported.

Crews used an offensive attack to extinguish the fire, declaring it under control at 8:23 a.m. Damage was contained to the suite of origin.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and no damage estimates are currently available.
