Winnipeg, MB – The Millennium Library, 251 Donald St., is implementing a security screening system as of Monday, February 25, 2019 to enhance patron and staff safety, and to continue providing a secure environment for all who visit the library.
“The safety and wellbeing of visitors and staff is a priority at the Winnipeg Public Library,” said Ed Cuddy, Manager of Library Services. “These security enhancements will help keep Millennium Library a safe, open and accessible space that meets the diverse needs of the community.”
Everyone who enters the Millennium Library through the building’s front lobby will be guided to the screening area. Visitors will undergo a bag check, and a hand-held metal detector will be used to check for items not permitted in the library, such as alcohol or weapons. Patrons with prohibited items will be asked to remove or discard them before entering the library. There are no storage facilities for prohibited items at Millennium Library. Illegal items may be confiscated and reported to the Winnipeg Police Service. Visitors who decline the security screening will be refused entry into the library.
The screening system will be operated by the library’s existing contract security team, GardaWorld. Other entry options will be available for specific groups, such as preschools, when visiting the library.
The Millennium Library checkout desk will open at 10 a.m. to align with regular library hours. Patrons who wish to pick up their holds before or after the library’s regular hours of operation may use the Millennium Library Smartlocker located in the Skywalk.
