Winnipeg, MB - A new year will bring changes to Winnipeg’s Handi-Transit service including an updated scheduling system for improved service and a refreshed name to include more inclusive language.
In September 2017, Handi-Transit launched a campaign to choose a new, more inclusive name for the service, which solicited feedback from the community and stakeholders. Through this process and in consultation with the Handi-Transit Policy Advisory Committee, the name Winnipeg Transit Plus was chosen.
In addition to refreshing the name of the service, Winnipeg Transit Plus will also be implementing a new scheduling system in early 2019 that will further serve to create a more transparent service. RouteMatch features an online app, call-out notifications, and individualized registrant web portals which will enable customers to schedule their own trips. A new user guide and an updated website with detailed service policies and guidelines will also be available as part of the RouteMatch rollout. Information sessions will be scheduled in early 2019 to familiarize registrants with RouteMatch.
“I’m pleased we’re moving forward with these important improvements to Handi-Transit service” said Councillor Matt Allard, Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works. “Handi-Transit’s new name, Winnipeg Transit Plus, more accurately reflects the City’s fundamental commitment to equality and providing inclusive customer service.”
Since the Handi-Transit name was adopted in 1977, there have been many changes in our understanding of disability issues and the language used to describe persons with disabilities. The introduction of new Provincial legislation, The Accessibility for Manitobans Act, and its continued development provides clear direction on the use of inclusive language when referencing services for the community. A new name for Handi-Transit is one step towards a more inclusive environment for all Winnipeggers.
