Winnipeg, MB - The City of Winnipeg is continuing its investment in riverbank stabilization through the Lyndale Drive Retaining Wall Rehabilitation Project, which involves removal of the existing retaining wall and undertaking over 500 lineal metres of riverbank stabilization work this winter.
“The work is necessary now as the budget requirement would rise significantly if the riverbank failed ahead of undertaking the stabilization work, as a portion of it did in 2013,” said Councillor Brian Mayes, Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Water and Waste, Riverbank Management and the Environment. “In addition, Lyndale Drive is a primary dyke for flood protection, which elevates the importance of this riverbank restoration.”
Lyndale Drive forms a portion of the City’s primary diking system to defend against flooding along the Red River. The riverbank has a history of instability, and an existing timber retaining wall between Gauvin Ave. and Monck Ave. is nearing the end of its design life.
An administrative report has been submitted to the Standing Policy Committee on Water and Waste, Riverbank Management and the Environment, which recommends a first charge on the 2017 capital budget for the Lyndale Drive Retaining Wall Rehabilitation Project, with the goal of ensuring construction takes place before further slope movement takes place. This report is subject to Council approval.
Bid Opportunity 721-2016 - Lyndale Drive - Monck Avenue to Gauvin Avenue - Riverbank Stabilization and Associated Works, closed on Friday, October 21, 2016. A construction contract award amount of approximately $3.5 million is anticipated, with $2.7 million of that amount being used for riverbank stabilization. This work is in addition to the $1.6 million already budgeted by the City for other riverbank stabilization projects.
