Winnipeg, MB - Mayor Brian Bowman issued the following statements in response to the tragic events in Orlando, Florida over the weekend, and in response to learning of the passing of Mr. David Sanders.
In response to the tragic events occurring in Orlando, Florida, the Mayor issued the following statement:
On behalf of all Winnipeggers, I want to offer my deepest condolences to all families and friends of the victims of the senseless violence that occurred in Orlando, Florida over the weekend.
My heart sank when I learned of what happened.
Just a week ago, I was joined by many Mayors from across Canada as we marched together in Winnipeg’s Pride parade and celebrated our diversity.
This weekend’s events underscore how essential it is that we not lose our resolve in building a community, a city, and a nation committed to acceptance, equality, safety, and inclusivity for everyone.
I will be standing in solidarity tonight with many Winnipeggers and Manitobans, together with and in support of Winnipeg’s LGBTTQ community, to honour victims as well as support families and friends.
I encourage all those who are able to join me.
In response to learning of the passing of Mr. David Sanders, the Mayor issued the following statement:
As a lifelong Winnipeg resident, David cared deeply about his community and our city.
Throughout the 2014 election, David was very passionate about Winnipeg, and cared deeply about making Winnipeg better.
David was dedicated to our community, and he demonstrated his commitment through active participation and leadership in university, schools, sports, community and charitable organizations.
My thoughts and condolences are with his family.
