Winnipeg, MB. -âTomorrow, City Councillors will begin their temporary move to the Administration Building located at 510 Main Street to accommodate the redevelopment of the Council Building. The Administration Building is located directly across the Courtyard from the Council Building.

This long overdue redevelopment work is required to maintain the City Council Building and bring it up to current safety system and Code requirements.

Starting May 25, 2016, Councillors and their staff will be moving to the east half of the 3rd Floor in the Administration Building. The temporary relocation is expected to last for approximately one year.

In July 2016, the Mayor and his staff will also be moving into Administration Building, and they will be located on the east side of the 2nd Floor. Their move back date is currently scheduled for July 2017.

The Council Building is over 50 years old and was designated a heritage building in January of 2015.

A number of deficiencies with the Council Building were identified in a Crosier Kilgour report which was originally completed in 2002 and updated in 2012. They include:

  • The roof has reached the end of its useful life and available insulation technologies exist to improve energy efficiency;
  • The clerestory windows are leaking and require replacement, which would improve energy efficiency; and
  • Repointing the Tyndall stone façade is required to prevent further water damage and building material/structural erosion.

These deficiencies will be addressed as part of the building redevelopment.

Health and life safety enhancements will also be made to the building including asbestos abatement and/or removal, and fire detection, fire suppression and alarm system improvements to meet current code.

Work on the Council Building started in the summer of 2015 with roof repairs, followed by tyndall stone repointing in the fall, continuing into the spring of 2016.

The total cost of the Council Building redevelopment is expected to be $4.1 million (Class 5 estimate).

There is no work planned for the Council Chamber and the two Committee rooms, so they will continue to be used.
