Truck plowing focused on main routes, bus routes and collector streets

Winnipeg, MB - In response to the recent and forecasted snowfall, a City truck plowing operation was initiated this morning on main routes, bus routes and collector streets to improve roadway conditions. Salting and sanding of streets continues around-the-clock. Plowing of sidewalks on main routes is also underway and plowing of back lanes will begin Thursday morning at 7:00 a.m. and will continue until completed.

The following plowing and ice control activities are underway:

Priority 1 streets (regional) - Truck plowing is underway on main routes, and will continue through to completion. Salting and sanding operations are continuing to improve traction.

Priority 2 street (collector/bus routes) - Salting and sanding continues. Once the truck plowing of main routes is complete, truck plows will then begin clearing bus routes and collector streets later this evening.

Priority 3 streets (residential) - Crews will be sanding residential streets where required. The City is continuing to monitor the condition of residential streets.

Priority 1, 2 and 3 sidewalks - Plowing of sidewalks on main routes is underway and will be followed by plowing of sidewalks on bus routes and collector streets, and then sidewalks on residential streets.

Back lanes - Lane clearing will begin tomorrow morning, Thursday, December 17 at 7:00 a.m., and will continue day-time only until completed.

The estimated cost of current operations is approximately $1 million.

As outlined in the Council Approved Policy on Snow and Ice Control, sanding and plowing efforts will initially be focused on 1) main routes (Priority 1), and 2) bus routes and collector streets (Priority 2).
