Disraeli Active Transportation Bridge, Public Works East Yard Complex receive awards from Canadian Public Works Association

Winnipeg, MB - Officials from the Province of Manitoba and the City of Winnipeg gathered today in Winnipeg to accept the Canadian Public Works Association's 2014 Project of the Year Award for the Disraeli Active Transportation Bridge. The Disraeli AT Bridge received the award in the Transportation Category for a construction project valued at more than $5 million.

The City of Winnipeg's Public Works East Yard Complex was also honoured by the CPWA in the Environmental Category.

�The Manitoba government is proud Winnipeggers can travel more easily and enjoy public space in healthy ways, thanks to investments like this one in the Disraeli Bridge,� said Minister of Labour and Immigration Erna Braun. �Investments in public infrastructure help build stronger communities and a better quality of life for all Manitobans.�

�The Disraeli Active Transportation Bridge is a key artery of active transportation in our city and has already served our citizens well,� said Councillor Janice Lukes, Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works. �Active transportation is important for the health, well-being and economic development of our city, and we look forward to expanding our active transportation networks in other areas of Winnipeg.�

The CPWA Public Works Project of the Year Award promotes excellence in the management and administration of public works projects by recognizing the alliance between the managing agency, the consultant / architect / engineer and the contractor who, working together, complete public works projects.

About the Disraeli Active Transportation Bridge
In 2008, the City of Winnipeg received feedback from public consultation during preliminary design of the Disraeli Bridge project which identified that pedestrian and cycling safety and accessibility were high priorities. The AT Bridge was built on the existing concrete foundations from the original Disraeli River Bridge. This allowed the project to maximize economic benefits and minimize environment impacts.
