Partial proceeds donated from State of the City Address; local businessman Albert El Tassi matches contribution

Winnipeg, MB - Mayor Brian Bowman kicked off a day volunteering with Habitat for Humanity Manitoba to help build a home in the west end for a deserving Winnipeg family by presenting a $3,000 donation to Sandy Hopkins, Chief Executive Officer of Habitat for Humanity Manitoba. Dave Angus, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce was also on hand to help present the gift.

“Habitat does tremendous work in our city building safe, affordable housing for purchase by low-income working families in our community. I am pleased donate a portion of the proceeds from my inaugural State of the City address to Habitat for Humanity Manitoba so they can continue to positively impact the lives of deserving Winnipeggers,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “Habitat embodies the ‘Winnipeg way’, and I am proud to volunteer today to help strengthen our city as a vibrant and caring community that we are all proud to call home.”

“Mayor Bowman spoke passionately at the State of the City Address about building a stronger community, and the work of Habitat for Humanity exactly matches those intentions,” said Dave Angus, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce. “Habitat does tireless work to mobilize volunteers and raise funds to provide affordable and accessible housing. The Chamber is proud of the continued efforts of Habitat and the support shown by these community leaders, Mayor Bowman and Albert El Tassi.”

Local businessman and philanthropist Albert El Tassi, CEO of Peerless Garments, presented a personal donation of $4,000, making the donation to Habitat of Humanity Manitoba a total of $7,000.

“Mr. Albert El Tassi is an example of the kindness and generosity that Winnipeg is renowned for,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “Mr. El Tassi is well-known as a community-builder and his contribution to Habitat for Humanity Manitoba will ensure that our neighbourhoods will continue to grow and thrive.”
