2015 - 2020 Strategic Plan shaped by over 5,200 voices from the community

Winnipeg, MB - The City of Winnipeg’s public library is launching a new five-year strategic plan, which is the result of community consultations, staff and stakeholder input, and analysis of trends and issues affecting public library service today. The plan will ensure the library continues to meet the changing needs of the community.

“Libraries are an important hub of information-sharing and community-building in Winnipeg,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “More than 5,000 Winnipeggers shared their voices and ideas with the City of Winnipeg, and the new 5-year strategy takes their ideas and turns them into a plan for and by the community.”

As part of the community consultation, over 5,200 Winnipeggers provided input to help shape the future of Winnipeg Public Library through online surveys including French and accessible versions, “Ideas Fairs” public events, and engagement activities in the community. Input was received on collections, programs, space and service delivery, and the community and social role of the library.

“We heard about the need for improved hours, expanded online resources, more leisure and study space and new collaborative learning spaces, and will be taking all of these ideas into consideration going forward to ensure libraries remain vital hubs in our communities,” said Rick Walker, Manager of Library Services.

In October 2011, the City’s Audit department recommended that the Library Services Division develop a plan that identifies goals and related strategies that will take the system into the future.

Goals that have been set to ensure the library system remains a dynamic and vital service for all users include:

  • Supporting early literacy skills in young children through increased investment in materials, services and programs for families, childcare providers and educators
  • Providing excellent customer service
  • Investing in more programs that advance digital literacy
  • Ensuring all library branches are welcoming and accessible destinations
  • Selecting material that reflects the diverse needs of the community
  • Developing stronger relationships with Indigenous peoples and newcomers
  • Providing opportunities for older adults to meet, learn and contribute
  • Expanding the impact of the library beyond its physical branches through community outreach and digital services
  • Extending libraries’ operating hours for enhanced convenience and accessibility.

This 2015-2020 Strategic Plan will ensure the library remains a vibrant, responsive and innovative service provider for Winnipeggers for years to come.
