Winnipeg, MB - Providing citizens and their families with modern and safe facilities to participate in leisure and sport is the goal of a new funding model that will see new investments in community parks and recreation.
The new program, known as the Parks and Recreation Enhancement Program, amalgamates and enhances the former Community Park Amenities and Playground Structures programs. The 2014 Preliminary Budget proposes increasing total spending for this amalgamated program by $3 million, for a total of $6.3 million.
“The City of Winnipeg is investing in community spaces like pools and parks,” said Mayor Sam Katz. “Winnipeggers looking to be active and have fun will enjoy these revitalized facilities and public spaces in all quadrants of the city.”
One of the projects identified as a priority is Seven Oaks Indoor Pool. Phase One of the renewal plan includes a renovation of public areas in 2014, while Phase Two includes a new indoor spray pad and wading pool in 2015. The total cost of the project is $4.95 million. The project budget includes $1,021,428 from the Manitoba-Winnipeg- Building Communities Initiative, subject to concurrence by the Province of Manitoba.
“Once the renovations are complete, Seven Oaks Pool will feature a unique indoor spray pad and wading pool, creating a new, year-round recreation option for families,” said Councillor Devi Sharma (Old Kildonan). “This addition, along with the renovated public areas and updated, accessible change rooms, will be enjoyed by area families for years to come.”
This funding is subject to approval by City Council and will be considered as part of the 2014 Preliminary Budget.
The 2014 Budget builds on the City’s long-term plan to improve the quality of life for all of our citizens by renewing our infrastructure, focusing on core services, and building communities through libraries, parks and recreation.
