Over $5 million invested for the completion of an outdoor Aquatics Park

Winnipeg, MB - Today, Mayor Sam Katz and Councillor Russ Wyatt announced $5.7 million for the modernization and completion of an outdoor Aquatics Park in Transcona.

“This project at Transcona Centennial pool reflects the City of Winnipeg’s continued commitment to provide modern, accessible recreation facilities,” said Mayor Katz. “We are making significant investments in our pools and community centres now to ensure that they meet the needs of citizens well into the future.”

“It’s been nearly a half century since any major work has been done at the Transcona Centennial pool site,” said Transcona Councillor Russ Wyatt, Chair of Finance. “With these additional investments, that include a vastly improved outdoor pool along with other major upgrades, we are truly making this a first-class Aquatics Park that will serve the citizens of Transcona for years to come.”

The Transcona Centennial pool project includes a massive reconstruction comprising of a brand new outdoor pool with an accessible beach entry making it available to all citizens regardless of abilities.

Other features include:

  • Multiple outdoor water slides
  • Increased number of features in the spray pad as well as new spray features in the beach entry pool
  • Major renovations to washrooms, change rooms, including addition of family change rooms
  • Improved mechanical system
  • Clerestory windows for the indoor pool providing for more natural light
  • New fencing, decking and landscaping

The design and final features of the Aquatics Park were a result of extensive community consultations which began back in June 2010.

Construction will begin next spring with every effort being made to have the existing spray pad remain open during the 2014 summer. The project is expected to be completed in 2015.

Councillor Wyatt also noted that this project will in no way impact the existing Transcona Stadium and baseball diamonds nor the soccer fields that are also located on the site.
The vast majority of the funding, $5 million, comes from the City of Winnipeg 2013 Capital Budget. The remaining funds are included in the 2014 Preliminary Budget that will be considered by City Council on December 17, 2013.

The 2014 Budget builds onthe City’s long-term plan to improve the quality of life for all of our citizens by renewing our infrastructure, focusing on core services, and building communities through libraries, parks and recreation. Investing in citizens’ priorities ensures that Winnipeg continues to be a great place to live, work and play, now and in the future.
