2013 Performance Review reports fewer vacant and derelict buildings, cleaner neighbourhoods in the North End

Winnipeg, MB - A report being brought forward by the Public Service shows that partnerships between Community By-law Enforcement and North End community associations have proven successful in making neighbourhoods cleaner and more safe.

A number of North End areas are cleaner, with less garbage accumulating on private property as a result of the Working Together to Improve Neighbourhood Liveability mandate. As well, the number of vacant and derelict buildings in Winnipeg has decreased by 32 per cent, from 577 as of October 31, 2010 to 392 as of October 31, 2013.

“These neighbourhood improvements show the great things that happen when the City and community residents work together,” said Mayor Sam Katz. “Neighbourhood pride and community engagement is what this By-law is all about.”

The Working Together to Improve Neighbourhood Liveability mandate aligns with City Council policies, initiatives and By-laws to achieve:

  • Neighbourhood and individual well-being
  • Neighbourhood pride and quality of life
  • Sustainable communities
  • Public and employee safety

Neighbourhoods that have seen a significant reduction in vacant buildings (nine or more) include Dufferin, North Point Douglas, Weston and William Whyte. Five yard-to-yard By-law inspection sweeps were conducted in North End communities since April of this year.

Leaders from several area neighbourhood groups have said that By-law Enforcement Officers are making a positive difference in their community. In fact, the report found that 87 per cent of customers are satisfied with property standard inspections, up from the 73 per cent customer satisfaction rate in 2010.

“The William Whyte Residents Association continues to work with the City of Winnipeg’s Community By-law Enforcement team to help make the William Whyte neighbourhood safer and cleaner,” said Annette Champion-Taylor of the William Whyte Residents Association. “Although there is still much work to be done, our efforts are starting to pay off. Good things are happening and the community wants to be part of the action.”
