City of Winnipeg gets ready for the 2013 Santa Claus Parade

Road closures and Transit rerouting in effect to ensure Santa makes it on time

Winnipeg, MB - On Saturday, November 16, 2013, a number of road closures will be in effect due to the 2013 Santa Claus Parade.

Starting at 1:30 p.m.:

  • Portage Avenue east of Sherbrook Street to Portage Avenue East at Westbrook Street

Starting at 3:00 p.m.:

  • Southbound Main Street from McDermot Avenue to Graham Avenue
  • Northbound Main Street from St. Mary Avenue to Portage Avenue
  • Pioneer Avenue from Main Street to Westbrook Street
  • William Stephenson Way from Main Street to Waterfront Drive

Roads will re-open following the parade.

Winnipeg Transit will re-route all buses operating in the vicinity of the 2013 Santa Claus Parade. The re-routes will be in effect from approximately 1:30 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. For route and schedule information, visit Winnipeg Transit or contact 311, open 24 hours every day, by phone at 311 or by email at 311@winnipeg.ca

As increased vehicle traffic and pedestrian activity near the parade route will slow all travel in and out of the downtown area, please allow for extra travel time.

The City of Winnipeg is pleased to be participating in the parade once again, including representation from:

  • Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service ladder truck #1 and supporting walking crew from the Retired Fire Fighters Association.
  • Fire Fighters' Historical Society 1966 Mac pumper truck and crew.
  • Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Superintendent’s truck with volunteers who will be handing out junior paramedic stickers.
  • Transit Heritage Association with one of their antique Transit buses.
  • Public Works Street Maintenance Division - Know Your Zone campaign float.
  • Public Works Forestry Branch candy cane float featuring the one and only Mrs. Claus.

New for this year, will be the Animal Services Agency float which will feature a decorated Animal Services vehicle. Accompanying the vehicle will be dogs that were unlicensed and picked up by Animal Services Officers. The dogs will be wearing “Adopt Me” vests and available for adoption.

The Winnipeg Police Service will also be represented in the Santa Claus Parade by Chief Devon Clunis, Chief of Police who will ride on a vintage paddy wagon and Winnipeg Police Service members wearing traditional buffalo coats. Kids with life threatening illnesses from the Dream Factory will also be riding with Police members in new cruiser cars.
