New services and new collection schedule rolling out next week

WINNIPEG, MB - September 24, 2012 - This is the last week of the Five-Day Collection Calendar and the last week for manual collection of blue boxes and garbage containers. Residents can place material in their new recycling and garbage carts AFTER their garbage and recycling is collected this week.

The City is rolling out the new recycling and garbage collection services to the remaining 165,000 residential properties starting Monday, October 1, 2012. The new services began on August 1, 2012, for about 24,000 residential properties formerly served by large metal shared community garbage bins (AutoBins).

By Saturday, September 29, 2012, all single-family homes should have received a new recycling and garbage cart. Residents who haven’t received their new carts by Sunday, September 30, 2012, should phone 311.

Included with one 240-litre grey garbage cart (holds about the equivalent of three standard-size garbage bags) and one 240-litre blue recycling cart (holds about the equivalent of four-standard size blue boxes), residents should have received:

  • two complimentary compostable yard waste bags as a sample of the type of paper bag accepted in the program,
  • a user guide with full program details, and
  • a calendar highlighting all the garbage, recycling and yard waste collection days until the end of 2013.

Trucks equipped with mechanical arms will empty the carts every week of the year and yard waste will be collected once every two weeks from April to November, on the same day of the week that garbage and recycling carts are emptied.

A set weekday collection schedule replaces the current Five-Day Collection Calendar. Residents have been assigned a collection day (e.g., every Tuesday) that will remain the same throughout the year, except for the weeks with Remembrance Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, when collection will shift over one day for residents with a collection day falling on or after the holiday. For example, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day this year fall on Tuesday, so Tuesday’s collection will move to Wednesday, Wednesday’s collection will move to Thursday, Thursday’s collection will move to Friday, and Friday’s collection will move to Saturday. Residents who are unsure of their collection day for recycling, garbage and yard waste should phone 311.

Residents can use their old garbage containers and blue boxes as yard waste containers. Yard waste must not be placed in the blue recycling carts.
