On May 29, 2026, at 10:27 a.m., members of the Manitoba Integrated Violent Offender Apprehension Unit (MIVOAU) attempted to stop a vehicle (later confirmed as stolen), while actively searching for the driver, who had outstanding warrants and was reported to have been in possession of a firearm.
The suspect evaded police, by ramming their police vehicle and then driving off.
After several minutes, police spotted the man walking in the King Edward neighbourhood. Again, evading police, the suspect ran off, resulting in a brief foot pursuit, at which point he broke into a residence in the 400 block of King Edward Street.
Once inside, the man pointed a firearm at police through a window and police discharged their firearm. Numerous backup units attended, including the Tactical Support Team (TST), K9, General Patrol officers from West and North District, as well as the Drone Unit.
At 11:09 a.m., an adult male ran out of the house and indicated that two teenage female residents were being held hostage by the unknown suspect who was armed.
The situation transitioned into an armed and barricaded protocol. One of the teens was rescued through a main floor window, however, the other teen remained trapped inside with the suspect. The situation escalated as a fire was set inside the residence.
Members of TST immediately entered the smoke-filled residence and rescued the remaining teen. The suspect subsequently exited the residence brandishing a firearm. A use of force encounter took place where officers discharged their firearms and the man was struck. The 34-year-old succumbed to his injuries.
The fire was successfully extinguished and the scene was secured.
No citizens or police personnel were injured during this incident.
