In September of 2025, the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS), in collaboration with the City of Winnipeg, conducted a targeted safety strategy to address violent and disruptive behaviour on Winnipeg Transit. The project ran until the end of 2025. Due to the success of the project, the WPS will return to Winnipeg Transit busses, stops, and hubs this spring.
In 2024, 325 violent crimes were reported at Winnipeg Transit locations, including on buses and areas around bus shelters, a historic high and nearly triple 2019 levels. As a result of the WPS transit safety operation last fall, transit-related violent crime fell by 18% compared to the same time period in 2024.
Beginning this weekend, WPS will once again deploy an increased police presence across Winnipeg Transit routes and facilities. You can expect to see officers riding on buses and patrolling near transit stops, including bus shelters and stations. Similar to the fall, the operation will include both uniform and plainclothes officers and aims to prevent, detect and suppress violent crime and disorder that impacts the safety and wellbeing of our community.
Members of the newly formed Rapid Response Unit will be among uniformed officers attending transit routes, stops, and hubs.
Everyone – riders, operators, and transit staff – deserves to feel safe. Violent and disruptive conduct will not be tolerated. This initiative is rooted in prevention and protection, aiming to foster a transit system that is welcoming, reliable, and secure for all Winnipeggers.
Thank you to the City of Winnipeg, Winnipeg Transit, and Community Safety Officers for collaborating on this project.
