On November 4, 2025, Central District Foot Patrol officers riding a transit bus as part of the Winnipeg Transit Violent Crime Intervention Strategy, encountered a woman who became violent and assaulted one of the officers.
At approximately 9:27 p.m., the woman boarded a bus in the area of Garry Street and Portage Avenue, and attempted to ride without paying fare. When officers intervened, the woman became violent and attempted to punch one of the officers in the face, and was taken into custody. The officer was not injured.
A 25-year-old woman is facing charges of Assault Peace Officer and Resist Peace Officer. She was released on an Undertaking.
Winnipeg Transit Violent Crime Intervention Strategy
This arrest is part of the ongoing Winnipeg Transit Violent Crime Intervention Strategy, which started in September 2025. It is a collaborative effort with the City of Winnipeg, aimed at addressing violent and disruptive behaviour and enhancing safety on Winnipeg Transit.
These proactive efforts are being conducted by members assigned to the Central Foot Patrol Unit, city-wide Divisional Community Support Units along with General Patrol Members, in both uniform and plainclothes capacities.
Utilizing a targeted and intelligence-driven approach, WPS members are riding on Winnipeg Transit buses along with conducting foot and cruiser car patrols at Transit shelters, stops and hubs throughout the City. Since the implementation of this initiative, there have been:
- 278 WPS enforcement operations
- 9 Criminal Code arrests
- 41 officer interventions related to fare evasion enforcement
Everyone – riders, operators, and transit staff – have a right to safety. Violent and disruptive conduct will not be tolerated. The Winnipeg Violent Crime Intervention Strategy initiative is rooted in prevention and protection, aiming to foster a transit system that is welcoming, reliable, and safe for all Winnipeggers.
