On July 10, 2025, at 7:23 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to an apartment suite in the 200 block of Bertrand Street for the report of a man in his 60s who was suicidal and armed with an edged weapon.
Police arrived at the suite and began communicating with the man through the door and established that he was still armed, refusing to come out and was threatening to kill himself.
The situation transitioned to an armed and barricaded. The Incident Command protocol was initiated, which included members from the Crisis Negotiation Unit, the Tactical Support Team and mental health clinicians from the Alternative Response to Citizens in Crisis Unit (ARCC).
After about two hours of of communicating with the man, at 9:25 p.m, he came out of the suite and was taken into custody by the Tactical Support Team. He was placed in handcuffs for safety. As he was being led down the apartment staircase, he broke free from the officers and fell down the stairs.
Police provided emergency medical care and requested an ambulance.
He sustained a serious injury as a result of the fall and was transported to hospital by ambulance. His condition remains critical.
