Between January and March 2025, the Winnipeg Police Service Central Traffic Division, in partnership with Manitoba Public Insurance and financial contribution from the Province of Manitoba, launched an enforcement campaign that focused on drivers under the influence of cannabis and other illicit drugs.
This initiative involved an education campaign emphasizing the dangers of drug-impaired driving.
Throughout the course of the campaign, officers conducted 302 traffic stops and administered 207 drug screening tests using approved screening equipment. As a result, 97 drivers (47%) tested positive for recent cannabis consumption.
Additionally, 86 Provincial Offence Act notices were issued by officers during the campaign. These included violations such as storage of cannabis in vehicles and passengers consuming cannabis while inside a vehicle.
The legal consequences for driving under the influence of drugs are the same as those for alcohol impairment. These consequences can include criminal charges, loss of your driver’s licence, vehicle impoundment, and hefty fines. Officers are equipped with the necessary tools and training to detect impaired drivers, regardless of the substance involved.
Don’t Drive High! It’s dangerous, detectable, and definitely illegal.
