The Winnipeg Police Board and the Winnipeg Police Service are pleased to announce the official swearing-in of Gene Bowers as the 19th Chief of Police in Winnipeg’s history.
Chief Bowers, who was announced as Winnipeg’s next Chief of Police on March 7, 2025, took the official Oath of Allegiance and Office today, administered by Provincial Court Chief Judge Ryan Rolston. The oath marks the formal commencement of his duties as Chief, reaffirming his commitment to serving the people of Winnipeg with integrity and leadership.
“I am deeply honoured to serve as the next Chief of the Winnipeg Police Service and lead the dedicated men and women of our police service. My focus will be on enhancing public safety, supporting our members, and strengthening community relationships,” said Chief Gene Bowers.
“I am committed to working closely with Indigenous leaders and community members to promote healing, understanding, and a path toward true reconciliation. Meaningful and positive change can only be achieved when we work together in partnership with the communities we have sworn to serve and protect.”
Chief Bowers has been a member of the Winnipeg Police Service since 1989 and brings extensive experience in Uniform Operations, administrative leadership, and criminal investigations. He is a recipient of the Police Exemplary Service Medal from the Governor General of Canada and the Attorney General of Manitoba’s Excellence in Law Enforcement Award. He is also a member of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, Manitoba Association of Chiefs of Police, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
A longtime Winnipegger and a graduate of the University of Manitoba, Chief Bowers steps into his role at a pivotal time, emphasizing public safety, reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, community engagement, and modern policing strategies.
