Update:

On January 31, 2025, the Child Abuse Unit took over an investigation involving two school age children who were approached by an unknown male in the J.B. Mitchell neighbourhood of River Heights.

Investigators identified the male, and after further investigation and gathering additional details, it was determined that although this behavior was concerning, it is not believed to be an attempted child abduction. No charges have been laid.

The Winnipeg Police Service would like to thank the public for their concern and information regarding this matter. Caregivers are encouraged to continue educating their children about safety strategies and reporting suspicious circumstances to a trusted adult.

As previously released:

On January 30, 2025, the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the report of an attempt abduction of a child in the 1700 block of Brebeuf Place.

West District General Patrol officers attended and learned that at approximately 8:30 a.m., the female victims, aged 8 and 10, were walking to school together in the area of Beaverbrook Street and Centennial Street when an unknown male began to follow them, and took hold of one of their hands. An adult in the area witnessed the incident and intervened. The male let go of the girl’s hand and fled the area. Both female youths arrived at school safely and reported it to an adult. No injuries were reported.

The suspect is described as in his 30s, 6 feet in height, with a thin build and thin blonde hair. He was wearing a tan beach hat with large brim and sunglasses, tank top, and tropical shorts.

Anyone with information or video surveillance is asked to contact the Child Abuse Unit at 204-986-3296 or anonymously at Crime Stoppers 204-786-TIPS or winnipegcrimestoppers.org
