On February 24, 2024, at approximately 2:20 p.m., Winnipeg Police Service's Service Centre officers and Auxiliary Cadet Unit members observed a 1998 white Ford Ranger drive onto the east sidewalk of Smith Street and come to a stop under the public entrance overhang of police headquarters located at 245 Smith Street.
In a coordinated effort, Service Centre officers, Central District General Patrol officers, and Tactical Support Team (TST) members quickly attended to the 1998 Ford Ranger still occupied by a lone adult male driver. Localized closures of both Smith Street and Graham Avenue were required to establish a safe perimeter to ensure the public's safety.
The male repeatedly refused to comply with officers' directions to exit the vehicle, at one point arming himself with a screwdriver. TST officers breached the vehicle's windows and deployed conducted energy weapons (Tasers) to safely extract the uncooperative male from the vehicle and safely place him under arrest. He was transported to hospital in stable condition, where he was assessed and subsequently medically cleared.
No damage to the building was sustained, and no additional injuries were reported.
A 48-year-old male from Winnipeg is facing the charge of Operating a Conveyance while Impaired to any degree by BAC, or Drug or a Combination of Both. He was also arrested on the strength of an outstanding unendorsed warrant in his name.
He was detained in custody.
