On March 8, 2023, at approximately 9:50 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service’s Auxiliary Cadet Unit, patrolling near the intersection of Edmonton Street and Graham Avenue, were approached by a distressed adult male in a wheelchair.
The 34-year-old male indicated having used a fentanyl-based street drug known as “down” moments before contact with police. As Cadet members engaged with the male, the effects of the drug began to take hold, and his condition deteriorated, culminating in the loss of consciousness.
Members advised dispatch and requested an ambulance for immediate medical assistance. Members provided emergency medical assistance and administered four doses of nasal Naloxone (Narcan) before ambulance personnel arrived. The administration of Naloxone resulted in the male slowly regaining consciousness. Paramedics arrived on scene, continued their assessment, and transported the male to hospital in stable condition.
The male is expected to recover fully.
To reduce the risk of an overdose, never use drugs alone and always carry Naloxone if opioids may be present. For more information on where you can find Naloxone, please visit the Street Connections website at http://streetconnections.ca/content.php?navigation_id=2294
