Update:

Members of the Major Crimes Unit have arrested a male for a machete assault that left a 52-year-old man with severe injuries likely to be life-altering.

On February 14, 2023, at approximately 3:15 p.m., the suspect was located by investigators in the West Alexander area and was taken into custody with the assistance of the Tactical Support Team. Upon his arrest, he was found to be in possession of a machete and a knife.

Investigators continue to believe that the assault was random and unprovoked.

Cintiro Jeremy Loon, an 18-year-old male of Kenora, Ontario, has been charged with:

- Aggravated Assault
- Possession of a Weapon x 3
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order x 2

He was detained.

As previously released:

On February 9, 2023, at approximately 1:30 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the intersection of Mount Royal Road and Ness Avenue for the report of an adult male assaulted with a machete.

General Patrol officers from the West District, assisted by Tactical Support Team members, attended and located a male in his 50s suffering from a lower-body injury sustained after being struck with a machete. The suspect fled on foot before police arrived. The victim was transported to hospital in stable condition, where he underwent surgery for his injury.

The Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation and learned the victim and suspect were passengers on a Transit bus. Both disembarked at Mount Royal Road and Ness Avenue when the suspect followed the victim and attacked him with a machete striking him in the lower body.

Investigators believe the assault to be random and unprovoked. No arrest has been made, and the Major Crimes Unit continues investigating.
