In early February 2022, Investigators with the Winnipeg Police Service Property Crimes Unit were alerted to a series of thefts in the city. A major internet service provider was experiencing multiple thefts of aerial cable. The cable supplies internet to both businesses and residential properties. The thefts caused disruptions to internet service and affected homes in neighbourhoods throughout Winnipeg, as well as causing financial losses to business customers. Costs to the company associated with the replacement and repair of the cables totalled approximately $100,000. Investigators worked closely with the company to identify a suspect.
On March 24, 2022, detectives arrested a male who was in the process of attempting to retrieve a previously cut cable.
