With the milder temperatures now upon us, we are seeing more activity out in our communities as people take advantage of the warmer weather and longer days. Bike traffic on our roads and in our neighbourhoods has increased.
The Winnipeg Police Service would like to take this opportunity to remind citizens of some timely bike safety information.
Under Manitoba law, it is compulsory for anyone under 18 years old to wear a properly fitted and fastened helmet when cycling. All cyclists are encouraged to wear helmets. In nearly 90 percent of cases where a cyclist was killed in a collision with a vehicle, the cyclist was not wearing a helmet.
It is important to wear a bicycle helmet correctly. Not too loose or sitting too far back on your head.
Manitoba Public Insurance’s Adult Cycling Booklet has a variety of bicycle safety information on the below topics including how to ensure your helmet fits right.
- Equipment and safety gear
- Basic Cycling skills
- Riding with children
- Cycling in traffic
- Bicycle/ vehicle collisions
- Common traffic situations
- Cycling infrastructure
The Winnipeg Police Service would like to wish all of Winnipeg a safe cycling experience.
