The Winnipeg Police Service is participating in Operation Clear Track, a North America-wide rail safety initiative held during Rail Safety Week (September 21-27, 2026).
In Canada, the initiative is led by Operation Lifesaver Canada and brings together law enforcement agencies, first responders, railway partners, and community organizations to promote safe behaviours around railway tracks and crossings and help prevent trespassing and crossing incidents.
As part of this year's initiative, the Winnipeg Police Service will conduct enforcement activities and engage with drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists about rail safety.
CN Police, Winnipeg Police Service, and Operation Lifesaver Canada remind the public to:
- Stay off railway tracks and property. Tracks are not recreational spaces or shortcuts. Never walk, cycle, play, take photos or videos, or spend time on railway tracks or property.
- Expect a train at any time. Trains can be faster and quieter than you think and may be closer than they appear. Never assume tracks are inactive simply because you do not see or hear a train.
- Stay alert and avoid distractions. Whether walking, cycling, driving or waiting for a train, pay attention to your surroundings and make sure you can see and hear approaching trains and warning signals.
- Cross tracks only at designated railway crossings. Never cross tracks elsewhere, even if there are no fences, gates or warning devices. Stop, look and listen for trains before crossing.
- Obey railway signs and warning devices. Follow posted signs and signals and never go around lowered gates or proceed when warning lights or bells are activated.
