From the latter part of May to the end of August, the Winnipeg Police Service’s East District Community Support Unit (CSU), with the assistance of the Property Crime Unit and Rapid Response Unit (RRU), has continued to address concerns from the community and retailers in the effort to combat retail theft.
The results shown below highlight the efforts of CSU during this time period within East District.
Results:
- Arrests: 149
- Deferrals to Restorative Justice or formal cautions under YCJA: 20
- Property Recovered: $24,000
Shoplifting is not a victimless crime. In some cases, there have been violent consequences as retail staff and members of the public have been injured. The Winnipeg Police Service recognizes that the issues surrounding retail theft are complex and we remain committed to working with our community partners and social safety net providers to ensure supports are provided to individuals facing food insecurity, poverty, or addictions challenges.
The success of a retail theft initiative is dependent on effective collaboration between various stakeholders and a multifaceted approach that addresses the root causes of theft. The aim is to raise awareness, deter potential offenders, and promote a safe and secure shopping environment.
