Update:
The Winnipeg Police Service have arrested a suspect in connection with a robbery and stabbing that occurred on August 25, 2026, at a retail store in the 2700 block of Portage Avenue.
The Major Crimes Unit continued the investigation regarding the incident and distributed a bulletin with a suspect description to Winnipeg Police Service members in an effort to identify and apprehend the suspect.
On August 26, shortly before 10:00 a.m., an off-duty West District General Patrol officer spotted the suspect in the area of Portage Avenue and Sharp Boulevard and contacted on-duty members. Shortly thereafter, the responding officers took the suspect into custody at Portage Avenue and Strathmillan Road without incident.
Nelson Preston SUMNER, 29, is charged with Aggravated Assault, Robbery, and Fail to Comply with Probation Order.
SUMNER was detained in custody.

On August 25, at 4:00 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a retail store in the 2700 block of Portage Avenue following reports of a commercial robbery in which a security guard was stabbed.
West District officers, along with members of the Major Crimes Unit attended and located a 22-year-old male victim suffering from a serious upper-body injury. He was transported to hospital in unstable condition and later upgraded to stable. The suspect fled before police arrived.
It was learned that the male had entered the store and was confronted by the security guard regarding suspected shoplifting. When the security guard directed the male to leave, he produced a sharp-edged weapon and stabbed the guard in the upper body. The suspect fled with stolen merchandise.
No arrest has been made, and the Major Crimes Unit continues to investigate.
