A 16-year-old youth is facing multiple charges after Winnipeg Police Service responded to an animal cruelty call in the Centennial neighbourhood resulted in the discovery of a deceased cat.
On July 20, 2026, at approximately 9:20 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a report of a youth injuring a cat with a knife.
Central District General Patrol officers attended the 600 block of Main Street and located the youth holding a knife with a deceased cat nearby. Officers took the youth into custody without incident.
Officers learned that the youth had attended the area with a cat confined inside a plastic bag. The cat was believed to be alive at the time. The youth then removed the cat from the bag and assaulted it with a knife, resulting in its death.
The 16-year-old has been charged with:
- Killing or Injuring Animals
- Causing Unnecessary Suffering to an Animal
- Possession of a Weapon
- Fail to Comply with Condition of Release Order x4
- Fail to Comply with Sentence x3
The youth was detained in custody.
