A 49-year-old man is facing an impaired driving charge after losing control of a vehicle and causing extensive property damage in downtown Winnipeg.
On July 19, 2026, at approximately 9:26 a.m., Central District General Patrol officers attended to the area of Balmoral Street and Sargent Avenue following reports of a motor vehicle collision involving a downed hydro line and damage to a bus shelter and City of Winnipeg traffic signal box.
Officers learned that a 2005 Ford Mustang, being operated by a 49-year-old man, was travelling eastbound on Sargent Avenue at a high rate of speed when it attempted to turn onto Balmoral Street and lost control. The vehicle collided with a bus shelter and a Manitoba Hydro pole before continuing into a traffic signal box. The vehicle ultimately came to rest with its front wheels suspended off the ground. No injuries were reported.
After speaking with the driver, officers determined his ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol, and he was taken into custody.
The 49-year-old man is facing a charge of Operation of a Conveyance While Impaired to Any Degree by BAC or Drug or a Combination of Both. He was released on an Appearance Notice.
