The Winnipeg Police Service has launched a modernized Bicycle Patrol Program, equipping trained officers with new e-bikes that will enhance proactive patrols, increase visibility and improve access to neighbourhoods, pathways, parks, public gathering spaces and special events throughout the city.
Twenty-five officers have completed specialized bicycle patrol training and will be deployed across all four districts using a combination of mountain bikes and 16 newly acquired e-bikes.
The program is designed to enhance public safety by providing officers with another operational tool to access locations that may be difficult to reach by traditional patrol vehicles while maintaining a highly visible police presence in the community.
"Bicycle patrols allow officers to engage directly with residents, business owners and visitors while responding quickly to emerging issues in areas where traditional patrol vehicles may be less effective," said Sergeant Kelsey Mahoney, Bicycle Patrol Program Coordinator.
Officers assigned to the program remain fully operational and may be deployed to support calls for service, proactive patrols, major events, riverbank operations and other public safety initiatives throughout Winnipeg.
The Bicycle Patrol Program will operate between May and October.
