On May 24, 2026, shortly after 7:00 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service took a man into custody after receiving a report of a suspect armed with a firearm in a residence in the 500 block of Herbert Avenue.

At approximately 5:45 p.m., 26-year-old Kevin Cook McKAY was present inside the above-mentioned residence when he heard a window breaking. McKAY became agitated, armed himself with a Taurus GX2 9mm handgun, and barricaded himself in a room with four other residents. During the incident, McKAY waved the firearm indiscriminately and discharged the firearm several times towards the front of the residence. No injuries were reported.

Due to the nature of the call, the Winnipeg Police Service initiated their Incident Command protocols. Officers from the East District General Patrol, with assistance from the Tactical Support Team, and members of the Rapid Response and Drone Units, attended and safely removed all occupants from the residence. McKAY exited the residence and surrendered himself to police. Officers seized the loaded firearm as evidence.

The Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation and learned that McKAY had also pointed the same firearm at a 25-year-old male resident earlier in the day. The victim was not injured during that incident.

McKAY is charged with the following offences:

  • Discharge of a Firearm in a Reckless Manner
  • Pointing a Firearm
  • Possession of a Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm
  • Careless Use of Firearm, Ammunition, Prohibited Weapon or Device
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
  • Forcible Confinement x 4
  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order

McKAY was detained in custody.
