On February 28, 2026, at 11:32 p.m., patrolling West district General Patrol officers reported a working fire at a residence in the 600 block of Nassau Street South. The WFPS was contacted to attend.
During their investigation, officers learned that a man in his 80’s, the lone resident of the home was unaccounted for. Due to the intensity of the fire, officers along with attending members of the WFPS, deemed it unsafe to enter the house.
Members of the WFPS transitioned to an exterior fire attack using an aerial ladder. (WFPS News Release). Once the fire was declared under control, members of the WFPS and WPS remained on scene and continued their investigation.
A systematic room by room demolition of the house was initiated, and the victim was located. Members of the WFPS Technical Rescue Task Force repelled from the bucket of the aerial ladder into the house and retrieved the 81-year-old victim.
The Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation. At this time, the fire is not being treated as a suspicious incident.
Notifications to family members have been made.
