On November 21, 2025, members of the Winnipeg Police Service’s Property Crime Unit arrested 29-year-old Dut Akeen AKEN following an investigation into a string of shoplifting events at retail stores within the city. The incidents, which occurred between October 13 and November 11, 2025, involved the theft of merchandise valued at close to $2000. The merchandise was later sold to a specialty store for profit.
- October 13: A man stole $500 worth of electronics from a grocery store in the 800 block of St. James Street
- October 18: A man stole an electronic device valued at $150 from a grocery store in the 800 block of St. James Street
- November 2: A man stole another $700 worth of electronics from a grocery store in the 800 block of St. James Street
- November 11: A man stole $500 worth of toys from a retail store in the 1400 block of Portage Avenue, a store he was court ordered not to attend
- November 11: a man sold stolen merchandise to a specialty store in the 500 block of Sargent Avenue and received money in exchange
The Property Crimes Unit assumed the investigation, and linked AKEN to the above incidents.
On November 21, at 9:37 a.m., AKEN was arrested by investigators in the downtown area.
AKEN has been charged with Theft Under $5000 x 4, Trafficking in Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000, and Fail to Comply with Probation Order. He was detained in custody.
