On October 15, 2025, at 4:15 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a condominium building in the 100 block of Bannatyne Avenue for the report of fire.
Attending Central District General Patrol officers learned that a man in his thirties experiencing mental distress had attended the lobby and poured gasoline on himself and his surroundings. Residents of the building were evacuated for their safety. The man, who was already being treated by WFPS Paramedics, was transported to hospital in unstable condition and later upgraded to stable.
Officers learned that the distressed man had attempted to light himself on a fire. The building’s sprinkler system was triggered and activated, quickly extinguishing the fire. No other injuries were reported.
Once the man had been stabilized in hospital, he was placed under arrest by officers.
He faces a charge of Arson with Disregard for Human Life and three counts of Fail to Comply with Condition of Release Order.
He was released on an Undertaking to appear in court at a later date.
