During the month of September, the Winnipeg Police Service’s Property Crime Unit, with assistance from North, East, and West Community Support Units, continued to address concerns from the community and retailers through the continuation of the Retail Theft Initiative. This proactive initiative, in partnership with the Retail Council of Canada and the Winnipeg business community, aims to target the serious issue of shoplifting.
The results shown below highlight the efforts of the Property Crime and Community Support Units throughout the month of September, covering fifty-seven businesses and locations throughout the city.
Results:
- Arrests: 84
- Charges/Warrants laid: Over 200
- Property Recovered: $10, 281.31
During the month, the Property Crime Unit also identified and arrested nine Prolific Offenders believed to be responsible for the theft of unrecovered property valued at $22,633.68.
Shoplifting is not a victimless crime. In some cases, there have been violent consequences as retail staff and members of the public have been injured. The Winnipeg Police Service recognizes that the issues surrounding retail theft are complex and we remain committed to working with our community partners and social safety net providers to ensure supports are provided to individuals facing food insecurity, poverty, or addictions challenges.
The Winnipeg Police Service uses data collected through crime analysis to determine where to focus its deterrence efforts. Officers will target areas of concern as this initiative remains an ongoing focus of the Property Crimes Unit.
